Paper Stitch

onelmon: Paper Stitch

During my 23 years of life, I think I have only done stitching up to ten times (which are mostly homework from school). But recently, I think I stitch at least once every week and I kind of enjoy this activity.

So, last week I tried to experiment with something different. I stitched with paper! It’s a bit tricky (if you compared it to stitching with threads) but it’s always fun to try something new once in a while!

Yang anda butuhkan:

  1. Kertas (boleh kertas koran, majalah, ataupun tisu toilet);
  2. Lidi atau semacamnya (panjang dan tipis/kurus);
  3. Air;
  4. Cat (tidak harus);
  5. Gunting/ pen-knife;

Things you need:

  1. Paper (any kind of paper (newspaper, magazine, or even toilet paper));
  2. A stick (or anything long and slender);
  3. Water;
  4. Paint (optional);
  5. Scissors/ pen-knife;
  6. Pins (or anything small and sharp to poke holes).

I’m using newspaper for this tutorial as newspaper is big in size and we can have a lot of stripes with just one sheet of newspaper =)

The width of the stripe above is around 1 cm (I just folded the sheet a few times and sliced the fold horizontally).

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 2

Lilitlah kertas koran pada batang lidi.

Start coiling the newspaper on the stick.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 3

Keep coiling (make sure the stripe is going down as you twirl it around the stick).

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 4

Biarkan sebentar.

After the whole stripe is coiled around the stick, go to your washstand and drop a few drops of water to the newspaper stick. Let it stay for a while.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 5

When it’s around 50% dry, uncoil the newspaper from the stick. Be extra gentle with it as it gets torn easily.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 6

Gunakan kedua tangan untuk memilin kertas koran sampai tipis.

Use both of your hands to roll the semi-wet newspaper into a long thin strip.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 7

Biarkan kering. Inilah yang akan menjadi benang anda. Buat beberapa jika perlu.

Let it dry. Now you have a strip of newspaper so-called thread. Make a few if needed.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 8

Take a piece of cardboard or a sheet of paper (wherever you want to stitch at) and a print out of text or image you want to stitch (hand drawn if you like!).

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 9

Mari kembali melakukan aktivitas masa kecil! Melubangi kertas untuk membuat tulisan!

Let’s get back to our childhood’s little exercise! Poking holes to create text!

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 10

The interval between stitches is totally up to your stitch design. As we are not using the ordinary thread, you may want to make the holes bigger for the new thread to be able to go through (I use a toothpick to do this).

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 11

You’ll be able to see your design after the poking exercise.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 12

The back side may look a bit awful but let’s get to the stitching anyway. Run the newspaper strip through the hole and make a knot (like what we do when we are doing hand sewing). Start stitching.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 13

Satu huruf selesai!

One letter stitched!

Tampak belakang.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 15

Keseluruhan.

The whole thing.

Jahitan koran pada kertas karton.

Newspaper stitching on a cardboard.

onelmon: Paper Stitch - step 17

I tried using toilet paper too! I dipped it in a cup of water that has been mixed with a drop of paint.

Dan ini hasilnya. Saya lumayan senang dengan hasilnya. Bagaimana menurut anda?

And this is what I got. I am quite happy with the result! What do you think?

Pengakuan:

Confession:

I had to have a glue ready on my side when I was doing the stitching. The paper (the platform for stitching) gets torn really easily because the holes are so close to each other. I made quite a number of accidental tears and got panicked trying to glue them back together.

    • Thanks, Gina! Great to hear that this post helps to spark new ideas!

      Not too sure about the heading, probably there is something wrong, indeed!

  2. This is such a beautiful and simple idea. I just LOVE it! Newsprint has such an extra life. I’ve been making paper lanterns all summer and have found myself endlessly attracted to making them from newspaper.

    • I second that, Gina! Decorative, book cover, the possibilities are endless and I love your idea of using it in lanterns!
      Hope this post helps! Happy crafting! :D
