Certainly, we’ve known a thing called hook and loop fastener (some called it Velcro) for all our lives. It has been used in bags, shoes, cable organizers and many others. (!!Funny fact!!) I’ve never known the Indonesian name for it until recently (honestly, I came to know its English name around 4 years ago, during my third uni year, embarrassing, I know). I’ve always used the phrase “Hi, do you have that thing … you know, the one you use to secure your bags or purse, tape-like thing that makes a breeettttt… sound when you rip them apart?” to the shopkeepers and it works all them time. In any case, 3 weeks ago, I finally got to know its Indonesian name (from a shopkeeper). In English translation, it literally means “Husband and Wife Tape”.
Yesterday, I thought of using a hook and loop fastener as the main material of experiment and came up with this home key hanger project as I remembered this “husband and wife tape” phrase. Something about home that comes in a pair. So, shall we get started?
Yang kita butuhkan:
- Kain flanel;
- Selotip suami istri;
- Pin dengan ujung seperti pengait;
- Jarum dan benang;
- Lem;
- Kunci.
What we need:
- Felt;
- Hook and loop fastener;
- Pins with rounded hook;
- Needle and thread;
- Glue;
- Key.
How-to:
Cut two pieces of circular felt – diameter 4 cm (one will be the color of the face and the other will be the color of the hair; you may want to make a blue-face creature with rainbow color hair).
Beri ekspresi wajah.
Give it a facial expression.
Beri model rambut yang anda inginkan.
Give it the most fashionable hairstyle you can think of (umm.. so this is sort of the “best” hairstyle in my opinion).
Layer the three items (in the direction: black felt – face – front hair) and sew or glue them together.
Take a small piece of hook and loop fastener (about 2.5 cm long) and a pin with a rounded hook (anybody knows the name for this?). Glue the pin at the back of the hair, slightly lower so that the rounded hook is visible from the front (see image below) and glue one side of the fastener on top of the pin (you can decide which part you’d like to bring around and which part you’d like it to stay at home ;) )
Buat sepasang dan beri pita. Kita telah selesai membuat gantungan kuncinya :D
Make a pair and give each of them a bow and we’re done with the key chain :D
Move to building the house. Design a house, a castle or even make a felt version of your own house.
Cut out the felt and sew them together. FYI, the yellow notebook-like object above is a window for the house (I’m just so terrible at this sewing thing).
Get the other side of the fasteners from the key chain you left just now and stick them here as the doors for the house.
Make sure one key chain does not overlap the other and we’re done! :D
Get your keys and hang them to let your partner, family or housemate know that you are at home!
Terima kasih telah membaca. Semoga anda menyukainya! :D

I cut a second black circle and glued it on the back of the head so that there is hair on both front and back. You also don’t notice the black Velcro as much.
If you put the soft part of the Velcro onto the head piece (instead of the prickly hook one), it won’t attach itself to other things in your purse or pick up lint.
Great point on the velcro, Linda! I think it was just lucky in my part that I happened to stick the soft one on the head. I’ve never thought about the hook getting stuck with other stuff on my bag.
Yes, to make it less noticeable, I used a second black felt on the head too. I’m glad that I bought the black velcro instead of the colorful one :D

nice craft :D very interesting XD Xoxo. maybe selotip suami-istri is called “doubletape” :D
Hellow, Christina! Thank you for the compliment! :D
I see. Language sure is a fun thing :D So you call it double-tape (in English?) there. Curious, how do you say the double sided tape then?
The thing you used to stick is called Velcro in english. I’m not very good in BM, but seems like you’re asking about that? haha. just answering in case it helps with anything.
Thanks, Jolene! Yeap, I think most people call it Velcro just like the brand. Some of my friends still call it hook and loop fastener though :)
Ohhh.. that’s something new I learnt too! :D hehe. My bunch of friends and I have always called it Velcro. hehe (: Thanks ;)

In Indonesian, hook and loop fastener is usually called ‘perekat’.
like this tutorial.
^_^
Ohhh, somebody actually answered my curiosity! I didn’t know it’s called ‘perekat’, always thought that term refers to a glue or something similar. Thanks a lot, pung! Appreciate your help very much and I’m so glad to hear that you like this! :D
Have a great weekend!

Where do you buy the pins from? Lovely tutorial and am looking forward to making it for christmas!
Hi, Naomi. Glad to hear that! :D I got the pins from a sewing supply store. I don’t know what they are called but I’m sure you can find them in a DIY & craft store (you can try the sewing section) :)
The pin is called an eyepin (:
