Checker Pouch

DIY Checker Pouch

Hi all! This week’s craft topic will be on the chess’ checker pattern. Anybody playing chess here? We can have a match! Kidding, I don’t even know the basic rules :\ All the same, I like chess, I love the black and white checker pattern as well as the chessmen (I think those pieces have awesome shapes, even the plain pawns). And with the checker pattern in mind, I thought I might as well try doing felt weaving here (a really simple basic weaving) and I ended up making a pouch out of it or to be precise, a pair of it. Care to try making one?

Halo semuanya! Topik craft minggu ini mengenai corak papan catur. Ada pemain catur di sini? Kita bisa bertanding! Haah! Dicoba, yuk!

What you need | Yang anda butuhkan:

  1. Black & white felt | flanel hitam dan putih;
  2. Elastic or non-elastic string (see step 7) | tali elastis atau tali biasa (lihat langkah 7);
  3. Chess piece (see step 7) | pion catur (lihat langkah 7);
  4. Needle & thread | jarum dan benang;
  5. Scissors | gunting;
  6. Glue | lem.

Step 1: Measure the size of the pouch, the size of the checker pattern and the length of the weaving lines and cut (mine is approx. 8.5 cm x 15 cm with 1 cm square for the pattern). Make 2 of this.

Buat 2 buah.

Step 2: Place one piece of felt on top of the other and sew the sides and bottom together (I was actually practicing with my sewing machine here).

Step 3: Flip it inside out.

Langkah 3: Balikkan kantung luar dalam.

Step 4: Cut stripes of black felt (the width should be the same as the width of the weaving lines on your pouch).

Step 5: Time to weave! Apply some glue where the overlaps happen if needed.

Langkah 5: Saatnya menganyam! Bila diperlukan, beri sedikit lem di mana dua flanel bertemu.

Step 6: Continue to the back side and you are done with the pattern.

[Finishing I – Non-elastic string] Step 7: Fold and sew the top (front and back). Pass through a piece of string and tie a knot at the end. Repeat for the other direction.

[Finishing II –  Elastic string] Step 7:Take a chess piece (I especially like the rook! Which one is your favorite?) and drill a little hole through at the back of it. Stitch it in front of your pouch. Next, make a loop of string and stitch it at the back of your pouch. Pull the loop and hook it on the chess piece.

[Penyelesaian II- Tali elastis] Langkah 7: Ambil pion catur kesukaan anda (saya suka pion benteng!

    • Hello Moriah. Thanks for bringing that up, I must have missed that part. Here is what I did, I applied some glue on top of the meeting point (I prefer not to stack the ends on top of one another, just have them meet) and glued it behind the vertical stripe.
