Did you guys realize that it has been quite some time since my last sewing post? I know I have been playing around these few months, experimenting with different materials and totally forgotten about improving my sewing skill. So, I’m back today with sewing and felt and a little bit of recycling idea. Get ready, people! We are making a pencil case, and this is probably one of the simplest cases you would ever made! Just trade the needle and thread steps with glue if you aren’t familiar with sewing. It’s as easy as that!
Sangat mudah! Ayo dicoba!
What you need | Yang anda butuhkan:
- Empty toilet rolls x 2 | Karton gulung bekas tisu toilet x 2;
- Felt | Flanel;
- Zipper | Resleting;
- Cardboard | Kertas karton;
- Needle & thread | Jarum & benang;
- Scissors | Gunting;
- Masking tape.
Step 1: Cut one of your empty rolls into 2 parts, with the ratio 1:3.
Langkah 1: Potong salah satu karton gulung menjadi 2 bagian, dengan perbandingan 1:3.
Step 2: Join the other empty roll with the newly cut roll (the longer one!) with masking tape or scotch tape.
Step 3: Get a piece of rectangular felt, divide it into two according to the new length of the 2 rolls (length of one with extra roll attached and length of the short leftover roll), cut it and join them back with a zipper.
Step 4: Fold into half and sew the side.
Langkah 4: Lipat dua dan jahit bagian sampingnya.
Step 5: Slip your toilet rolls in. Apply some glue on the outside wall of the rolls if you like.
Langkah 5: Masukkan karton gulungan anda. Beri lem pada dinding luar karton jika perlu.
Step 6: Get a little piece of cardboard and cut out a circle (circle’s diameter = toilet roll’s diameter). Make two of this. Use a thicker cardboard or just stack a few if you want a thicker base for your case.
Langkah 6: Ambil sepotong kecil kertas karton dan gunting bentuk lingkaran dengan diameter sesuai diameter gulungan karton tadi. Buat 2 set.
Step 7: Add a piece of circular felt on each of them.
Langkah 7: Berikan sehelai flanel bentuk lingkaran di atasnya.
Step 8: Stitch the 2 circular pieces to the cylinder case, top and bottom.
Step 9: And there you go! An easy and solid pencil case from toilet rolls! Hope you like it :D Note: You can decorate the inside with pattern paper if you want to, but I’ll leave that up to your creativity ;)

great idea it looks really useful. One question though, is this pattern possible to do with a snap instead of a zipper?
Hi, Samantha! Sorry for the late reply. Yes, you can just omit the cap if you want to use a snap, something like glasses case.

Hi onel this is a great idea and super easy thanks so much. I was wondering if you could make it without a zipper or something else to replace it. Thanks!
Thank you, Miriam! Maybe you can try making a part of the top case a little bit longer and attach a snap button or hook and loop?

This is such a great idea, I’m nuts about cardboard tube crafts! I’ll be sharing it on The Crafty Crow soon!
Cassi recently posted..Tassel Necklaces Kids Can Make
Thanks a lot, Cassi!! I know right! We have a bunch of tube rolls every month and it’s such a waste to just throw it away. Yay to free craft material (sort of)!
Can we use another cloth
Certainly, yes!
This project looks so adorable! However, I am stuck on step 3. How do you attach the zipper on to the felt? That may not be the smartest question in the world, but I am not very good at attaching things like zippers. Could you please explain a bit more thoroughly? Thanks!! :)
Hello, Naira! You cut a piece of rectangle into two, with the ratio 1:4. Slide open the zipper so you have zipper that branches into two. And then, you just need to sew the “branch” to the rectangle you cut just now, one branch for one rectangle. When you are done, cut off the rest of the zipper tape. Hope this helps!! If you are still unsure, let me know again, I’ll be more than happy to help :)

I also save the cardboard rolls from foil, plastic wrap and gift wrap that are a little thicker than the TP rolls, they would be great to use for longer items like knitting needles etc. If the zipper is too long can it be shortened?
Good idea, Kelly! The foil cardboard rolls will definitely give you a much stronger case. And yes, this case can be used as a storage to many things like the knitting needles, make-up brushes and many others, not just limited to pencils and stationery.
Yes, you can shorten the zipper (I actually did that). This link might help you if you need to shorten your zipper :)
